For Heidi, photography affords the opportunity to contemplate the personal history found in individual hands. She enjoys traditional landscape photography, but finds special attraction in her “Hands of Time” series.

   The hands she has captured on paper are usually weather-beaten and gnarled. Some of its owners since have passed away, but they remain fascinating maps of long journeys. “I try to appreciate the details, the texture, the depth, the mood and the tone,” says Heidi.

   In the portrait of her grandmother’s hands, Heidi tells the story of the woman who once hunted and trapped in the bitter cold of northern Michigan. “She did whatever she had to do to stay alive,” says Heidi.

   Heidi invites us to look close to our bodies and consider our hands and how well they serve us as we celebrate, toil and pray. They help us earn our daily bread. They hold our newborns, as well as our grandchildren, and wipe away tears of joy and pain. They write letters of love and shake in anger, these hands are eternal.
